I've also been having a heck of a time, trying to connect to the ESC.
I keep getting "could not connect to target" errors. I've tried connecting the +5v output from the ST-Link to the red wire (3rd pin from left) of the ESC, as well as to the fat red wire of the plug that connects to the battery. Still the same error.
I've tried Normal, HotPlug, and Connect under Reset, but nothing works.
I've tried with two different St-links, to two different ESCs, but no joy.
But... I did fry one St-link when I connected +5v to the red wire of the battery connector -- I'm guessing there was a residual charge in the cap on the ESC board, as I got a spark when I tried to connect . I had a spare ST-link handy so I tried it, but still couldn't connect.
At this point, the only ST-link I have is unproven; I've never used it before, so I can't say for sure that it's not just a bad unit, and the fact that the old one (which worked fine on past ESes and M365s ) didn't work for the Max doesn't necessarily mean that it's still OK. Might just be a coincidence.
For all I know, it could be an issue with the STEM32 software, drivers, or the targets themselves. No idea. No clear pattern yet, and it's a pain in the *ss to resolder each test target!
Has anyone run into this problem and if so, what did you do to get around it?
Thanks,
David
