GoTrax GXL Review - Best Electric Scooter For Getting Around

Electric scooters are all the rage. With companies like Lime and Bird offering on-demand scooter rental in metropolitan areas, it's safe to say this is becoming a trend. GoTrax is one of the best electric scooters and is taking a different approach and selling similar electric commuting scooters directly to consumers, which is why we've written this GoTrax GXL review.

The GoTrax GXL has eight-and-a-half-inch front and rear pneumatic air-filled tires with great shock absorption and even anti-slip treads. Although you probably wouldn't want to ride around on this in the pouring rain, it is enough to keep you steady and not feeling all the bumps as you're riding along.

That is paired with a 250-watt motor which is designed to deliver a smooth riding experience. Whether you are going through the neighborhood or commuting on this thing, you're not going to have a crazy, bumpy ride. Listed at a retail price of $299 it's a hard to beat package. Here are the top five reasons we found during our GoTrax review to make the GoTrax GXL your next electric scooter.

1. BRAKING
A scooter like this that can go pretty fast, breaking is an important part of the scenario. Thankfully the GoTrax GXL has front and rear breaking to bring you to a stop quickly. You've got a disk-based breaking system along with regenerative breaking as well. One other nice touch we found during our GoTrax GXL assessment is the built-in headlight, which helps with visibility in the evening and at night.

2. EASE OF USE
There are a lot of electric scooters, hoverboards, electric skateboards, and one-wheels available today. A lot of things either have a complicated learning curve or a complicated setup process, and we found during our GXL review that the GoTrax has neither. Everything about this was easy. Setup out of the box was literally just open the box, take out the handle unit, take out the board, remove two screws, insert the handle bar, put the screws back in and that's it. Power it on, and you're ready to ride.

3. PORTABILITY
If you're picking up something to commute on or commute with, you want it to be something that's portable and easily storable as well. The GoTrax GXL features a lever-activated holding frame, which allows it to fold down into a compact form factor. This makes it easier to carry around if you're bringing it on a bus or train, and makes storing it simple. Of course, if you don't need to fold it up, you can store it just as is, unfolded, using the built-in kickstand. This makes it easy to stand up the scooter anywhere.

4. SPEED
Now you've got it set up. You know how to fold it. You know how to carry it around. You know how to store it. Now it's time to get on and ride. During our analysis of Gotrax GXL and other scooters we've found that with any electric motor transportation, whether it's a commuting scooter or a Tesla, speed and especially range are key. The GoTrax GXL scooter sports two gears with the first gear going up to 10 miles per hour.

If that's not fast enough for you, you can kick it into second gear, which will go up to 15 miles per hour. This is a little bit faster than it sounds. It's hard to imagine going 10 or 15 miles an hour, but it is fast enough that you could injure yourself if you don't take proper precautions. The main one of which being wearing a helmet when you're riding these around, as recommended by GoTrax GXL reviewers.

If you want to review your Gotrax GXL's speed, you do have a digital display right up front, which gives you two important pieces of information. It has the speedometer to see how fast you're going, and the battery meter, which shows the remaining battery life. While riding you can quickly see how much juice and range you have left just by glancing down.

5. COMPLETE PACKAGE
Let's move on to the last favorite feature during our Gotrax GXL review, and it encompasses all the first four. The GoTrax GXL is the complete package, this thing is super fun. Going at a decline in second gear, you can achieve speeds above 18 miles per hour, while feeling safe thanks to the breaks being rock solid. It’s great to have breaks up front on the handle bar and have the physical rear break as well. The breaks are regenerative, which allow you to add power back into the battery when you're breaking. This means while breaking just a little bit while going down a long hill, you won’t be wasting battery. You'll actually be adding battery life into the scooter.

Bought the GXL about five months ago and it's been great. I use to walk, uber pool, or bile the 2.5 miles to and from work. None of these were the perfect fit. Bird schowed up with their scooters and gave me the idea to get one for myself after they go pushed out of town.

Pros:
Since owning it I've easily made back my money, reliable, really fun to ride, several speeds, and fold able. The tires are super tough as I've hit lots of potholes, ice, and several other even road surfaces. The light comes in handy when I have to commute home at night.

Cons
It would be nice if the range was a little longer, I can only get between 5 to 7 miles from it. I disagree with this review and did not find the brakes very responsive. Takes me around 15-20 feet to go from full speed to a stop. You have to be on alert in busy areas with cars or pedestrians. Once I went a week without using it started making some weird sounds. Those disappeared after a little while and guess it got stiff from working.

When purchasing I looked into other scooters and picked this one based on all the good reviews. Glad I did and highly recommend it!

After reading what seems like every review about every scooter I pulled the trigger on the GXL V2 for Christmas. Have ridden it a lot since then and it surpassed all my expectations. A friend purchased the Segway Ninebot ES4 for $650 and my GoTrax is better in every metric except range. That's only an assumptions though since we haven't gone far enough to lose more than half the charge. When I rode the Segway the top speed I got was 15.5 mph and couldn't get it higher whether going down a hill or flat out. On the GXL I'm always at 17 mph or high on a decline. It folds up smaller and is lighter than the Segway. If you have the extra money to spend on the Segway Ninebot ES4 buy two GXLs instead!

My commute is 4 miles one way 5 days a week. For the past three months I've been suing a GoTrax GXL. For the money you can't beat the ride. I added an auxilary bar upfront that has a cell phone mount, brighter headlight, and bell. The headlight it comes with is bright but I wanted more when riding to work at 5 in the morning. I also installed a URG tailight on the rear fender that's super bright. The GXL has good range, speed when needed, and thanks to the dual brake system best in class braking. It is hard to beat this scooter for the price. Other scooters in it's class cost over $200 more.

I got my scooter from walmart.com in early February and have been using to commute to and from work each day which is 4 miles one way. I'm 140 lbs with a back pack on so I that gives me a boost when it comes to speed and range. On flat parts I'll cruise at 18 mph. Haven't had a chance to check the full range yet since I recharge it at work by my desk then recharge it again once I get home. It has never used more than 2 bars each way out of the four total bars. I've put over 125 miles on the scooter since purchasing and it works perfectly. After first getting it I put green slime in the tires to prevent flats and never had one so I'm glad I did. To me the GoTrax is a steal at $299 shipped from GoTrax.com!

Love the scooter, but I'm in the UK and getting spares such as tires from Gotrax is bloody difficult. Does anyone know if generic 8&1/2" tires would fit? Such as ones designed for the M365?
