I will keep my new scooter on a sailboat and travel to various ports. On arrival there is often no transportation to go buy provisions, go to restaurants, explore the area, etc

So. I'm planning that a scooter will stow on the boat then provide transportation. 🤞 So I'm looking at very portable and light wieght models.

BUT,,,, how do I carry things from the grocery store etc?

I'm just learning to be comfortable riding, so I'm afraid of anything that will over-challenge my meager skills. I'm way past the age that I can tolerate a fall without major pain.

Does carrying a backpack require a lot of balancing skill?

How bout a basket on the front?

I need advice. What are you doing for carrying capacity?

THANKS !

Probably the most important factor would be how much range you want to have, the weight you want it to have, and whether you want it to be able to fold or not.

Just me personally, I do have a heavy bias towards bird scooters, if it were me I’d probably get either a bird m365, bird air, bird zero, bird one, bird 2, or a bird 3.
The bird air has a 16-mile range, 16-mile top speed, and the only bird that’s a folding scooter out of the box, however, the bird m365 can be folding too with modification. The Bird One, is a bit longer range at 18 miles max and a bit faster at 18mpg.

However, that may not be the best option you would want. That’s just me I like the bird brand, mainly because of the sleek look they have.

From what it sounds like though, since you want something light, portable, & safe. It would probably be the Xiaomi M365, Xiaomi M365 Pro, or the iScooter i9. The normal M365 weighs about 25lbs and has about 15 miles range. While the M365 pro weighs about 31lbs and has a 25-mile range and also 5.3 seconds from 0-15mph, 1 second faster than the normal M365.
The pneumatic, air-filled tires you would probably prefer over the no-air solid tires for better performance & traction in mud, rain, heavy rain, or adverse weather. However, some people like zero maintenance with solid tires. If you want the higher traction of air-filled tires, and if you plan to own it over a year you may want to consider getting, slime tube sealant, stans tire sealant, the main two most well known to prevent ever getting a flat. However, there’s also orange seal, serfas, and monkey goo.
Also the M365 and M365 pro, both have a folding handlebar and have a front electric and back hydraulic disc brake.

However, if you looking for something a bit of a step above the M365 and M365 pro it would probably be the Zero 9. The Zero 9 weights a bit more at 40lbs, with front and back hydraulic disc brakes, also with a folding handlebar. The top speed on the zero 9 is 28mph and has a range of 21mph.

If you want something a step above the zero 9, the next one above that would probably be the EMOVE cruiser. The EMOVE has a bigger motor with a higher range at 47 miles and 30.5 mph top speed. Weighing a bit more than the zero 9 at 59lbs, however, the EMOVE also can fold.

A step above the EMOVE cruiser would be, both the Kaboo wolf warrior 11, the wolf king or the X-Tron T88. While all three are more powerful than the Emove, the wolf warrior 11 has a top speed of 45mph and a range of 30 miles. The X-Tron T88 has a top speed of 53mph and a range of 62 miles. While the wolf king has a top speed of 59mph and a range of 33.4 miles.

If you’re looking for something above that, there’s the FJL SK3 and FJL E2, or the X-Tron X30, X-Tron X5, X-Tron Viper 7,000W, & X-Tron Viper 8,000W.
FJL scooters and X-Tron scooters are very similar to one another, however, the X-Tron scooters have a bit more of a “light show” than FJL’s. However, ultimately they’re virtually the exact same models.
Both X-Tron scooters and FJL scooters are tanks on two wheels, meant to have extreme 80-100 mile range, extreme performance 60-70mph, and extreme off-roading ability.

Now if you’re looking for more of a hyper-scooter something with a serious speed that you could take on the highway and be able to be passing cars on the highway with, there’s the Rion Thrust, Rion RE60, Rion Re70 and Rion RE90. These are both what you would call hyper-scooters, capable of a top speed over 80mph. These scooters are made to be extremely fast with very fast acceleration made almost entirely of carbon fiber. However, these are not the kind of scooters you would take off-roading with track-like suspension and Italian tires, these aren't made to handle rough off-road situations.
For off-roading, the X-Tron and FJL scooters would be a better choice.

However, you may want to watch the videos of each one and see which would be best for you.

Ultimately, it’s up to what it is you like and what you are looking for in terms of range, speed, acceleration, weight, off-road ability, portability and brand.

You also may want to buy off of amazon for an easy 30-day return if you end up not liking it.
However, if you don’t buy it off amazon or end up keeping it longer than 30 days, you could probably sell them for about what you paid if not more on offer-up, ebay, or craigslist.

If you want to carry things from the grocery store, there are 3-4 options from smallest to largest, a handlebar hook, a handlebar bag, a backpack, or a scooter/bike trailer, although I’m not sure how would work and only some scooters would be able to pull that.

If you’re not looking for something too challenging I would say either the M365, M365 pro, bird air (basically the same as an M365, just not as fast or as long of range), or the zero 9.

I’ve never ridden with any kind of backpack or any kind of storage accessories. However, I do know instead of bags weighting on the left or right side of the handlebars, the hook keeps the weight centered.
I imagine a backpack wouldn’t require much balancing skills, unless it’s something very heavy 30-50 pounds or so. The only things or obstacles I’ve ever encountered were just on sidewalks which were large cracks, large bumps, or nearly missing a couple curbs, you just need to be holding on to the handlebars very securely.

I’ve never seen a scooter basket before, I found one, but it might block out the headlight.

I’ve heard and seen it’s possible to tow a puppy or bike trailer. I just don’t know how it would be hitched or exactly how that works and only some scooters would be able to tow that, especially with cargo.
